The picnic that stayed inside

When rain rewrites the plan, the living room turns out to be a perfectly good destination.

Burger, fries and slaw unpacked on a sunlit table

An original fictional story. Characters and events are imagined.

A forecast through the window

The blanket was already folded by the door when the rain began. Eli watched three large drops land on the pavement, followed immediately by several thousand more. On the kitchen counter, the picnic plates looked optimistic. His friend June sent a message: “Still coming. Different park.”

A smaller adventure

June arrived with a deck of cards and the determination of someone who had already put on shoes. They cleared the living room, spread the blanket on the rug, and chose takeout bowls with different toppings. Eli added a cucumber from the refrigerator to the center of the blanket, mostly because he felt a picnic needed something they had sliced themselves.

Outside, inside

They left the window open just enough to hear the weather. Cars made soft rushing sounds on the street. The delivery arrived, the door closed, and the room filled with the smell of dinner. June announced that this park had exceptional restroom facilities. Eli pointed out that its view of a bookcase was also difficult to beat.

Keeping the new version

Nothing about the evening resembled the picture in Eli’s head that morning. It was smaller, warmer, and much less organized. When June left, the blanket stayed on the floor. Next to it was a note in their card-game scorebook: indoor picnic, no weather requirements. Some plans were good enough to change.
